Revisiting Speed and Balding - Blog comment by jimbartlett - 6 Nov 2017

... and then fall - keeping the total under the curve at 100%. Two weeks ago, AncestryDNA had me at 50,000 Matches (probably over half are false), and 2,000 4C Matches (some probably 5C or 6C) - that would result in a flatter curve than my percents above.. Thanks again for your expertise and level headed reasoning about this topic. Jim

Revisiting Speed and Balding - Blog entry by lkessler - 5 Nov 2017

... Webinars. Tim gave an introductory talk and an advanced talk on the use of Autosomal DNA Testing. In both talks, Tim showed the well-known and often referred to Speed and Balding diagram which I’m showing here: It is also highlighted on the ISOGG Wiki Identical By Descent page, where it says: “A study by Speed and Balding (2015) using computer simulations going ...

Family Tree DNA’s November Conference - Blog entry by lkessler - 19 Oct 2017

... Annual International Conference on Genetic Genealogy held each year by Family Tree DNA and I’ll be going to Houston from November 10 to 12 to attend. This is a tough one to get into (unless you are a speaker) as registration is only open to FTDNA group administrators, which I am not. But when Bennett Greenspan attended my Double Match ...

GCGS 2017 Day 3 - Blog entry by lkessler - 15 Oct 2017

... breakfast together, and then I led off repeating my talk from the day before on intro DNA. I had a few less people than the day before since many had already been at my first talk. It was again well received with many good questions. A few people met to talk to me one on one afterwards. My talk a bit later on using Autosomal DNA to help ...

... represented here, plus people from a number of States as well. My talk on intro DNA went well with good response and questions. I had anticipated many of the questions. To my recommendation that adoptees test everywhere was a suggestion that one should test at AncestryDNA because it has the largest number of testers and then transfer ...

My DNA Football Team - Blog entry by lkessler - 11 Oct 2017

... this morning, and how he and I would look to be half-sharing about a quarter of our DNA in a chromosome browser. Well that would make my grand-nephew the quarterback of my DNA Football team. His father, my nephew, would be the halfback. My daughters would be fullbacks. My sister would be in the 3/4 back position:  the ...

Behold Update - Forum post by lkessler in Questions and Answers - 8 Oct 2017

... That's about a month or two of work. But I've been kept very busy with some exciting DNA work that I've been doing and I put Behold down a few months ago to finish off a new version of Double Match Triangulator. And I'm leaving on Thursday for the Great Canadian Genealogy Summit where I'll be giving 3 talks on DNA testing and ...

Triangulation does NOT mean IBD - Blog comment by lkessler - 4 Oct 2017

Debbie: Well, I'm just looking at the results. And FamilyTreeDNA seems to have many fewer disprovals of IBD by parents at any given cM level than AncestryDNA does.

Triangulation does NOT mean IBD - Blog comment by debbiek - 4 Oct 2017

No I think it means the opposite. FTDNA can't use a higher threshold because they are not using phasing or any algorithms to remove pile-ups. The vast majority of matches that don't match either parent at AncestryDNA share under 9 cMs. Ancestry's own tests published in their white paper ...
