Add version to behold-setup.exe - Forum post by lkessler in Feature Suggestions - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, I need the executable to be named behold-setup.exe since I can always guarantee that version to be the most recent version. I have links to that program elsewhere that require a fixed name. But thanks for pointing this out, I do see that the File Version displayed is 0.0.0.0 when you hover your mouse ...

I've now added a question on genealogy.stackexchange.com: How Complete is GEDCOM Export from Various Programs?

What might be a temprary alternative to Behold - Forum post by lkessler in General Discussion - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, That's a very good question. Whatever program you use, I would suggest you pick one that will export to its GEDCOM every single item it allows you to enter on any of its forms. The test would be to put some dummy data into every possible input field (maybe use the name of the input field so you can ...

Date validation - case sensitive - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, I think I've flip flopped again back to Tamura's view and your view. Despite my doubts about this, I think I'm going to have to allow any case in the line value without giving a warning message. This is extra work for the programmer implementing GEDCOM, because the line value case must be retained for ...

Log file has problems with reporting problems with UTF-8 .ged - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 27 Nov 2014

Arnold, I found the problem. When the BOM and the Character set used mismatch, I have to do a conversion. I did not do the conversion on the full input line, but just to the extracted parts of the line. So the input line was still incorrect when displayed in the error message. I've now fixed it so that the ...

Log file has problems with reporting problems with UTF-8 .ged - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 26 Nov 2014

Arnold, Thank you for adding the PS. I find I can now recreate the problem as it does occur with a UTF-8 file that does not have a BOM. Now you don't have to send me anything. I'll work to fix it now. Louis p.s. I hate computer problems. I hope yours get solved without you losing anything significant.

Log file has problems with reporting problems with UTF-8 .ged - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 25 Nov 2014

Thanks, Arnold, for reporting this. But I can't reproduce the problem. When I try copying your long line you show above into a UTF-8 GEDCOM file, it doesn't happen for me. The log file is fine. That may be because when you copied the line to this forum, your browser converted it to Unicode and it became a ...

Running Behold on MAC OS X - Forum post by lkessler in General Discussion - 19 Aug 2014

Mervyn, Thank you for the confirmation that Behold will work under Parallels and Virtual Box on a Mac. I'm not sure if anyone has tested that before. I did know that it ran okay under Wine. Behold has a page at the Wine HQ, and Version 1.0.x has been given a rating of Gold under Wine. Louis

Date validation - case sensitive - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 1 Jul 2014

Yes. However, GEDCOM does not define the difference between "controlled" and "uncontrolled" line values. My interpretation is that controlled line values are line values that are restricted to a specified set of allowed optional values. Anything more complicated than that is likely deemed not to be controlled, ...

Line length restriction - Forum post by lkessler in Questions and Answers - 1 Jul 2014

Lines longer than 255 characters are illegal in GEDCOM. So yes, it is incorrect. Programs should not export lines longer than 255 characters.
