Going Paperless and Laptopless - Blog comment by lkessler - 16 Mar 2014
I agree that a few pieces of paper are easier to scan quickly than digital documents, just as physical books are more pleasant to read than digital books. But a good digital organization system (by source) combined with a good full text search engine is hard to beat when it comes to locating lots of stuff, e.g. ...

Re-evaluating the Future of Genealogy Software - Blog comment by lkessler - 16 Mar 2014
Taco,
Thank you for your detailed reply. Let me try in return.
1. If a hundred family historians came to one incorrect conclusion, it's probably because 99 of them copied it from the first.
2. I'd say less than 1% of genealogists want to "publish" as in journal type of publishing. I think the ...

Baerbel,
Don't feel you have to fill out the survey. It's more of a fun thing for the presentation. I may be putting my presentation up online after the talk, but there's not a lot of substance in the slides. They'll just be background to what I'll be saying during my talk.
How do you like your Windows ...

How many sources/citations is too many? - Blog comment by lkessler - 29 Dec 2013
I agree with what you say, and you're doing a great job with GenQuiry.
I don't know if I'd say we're "diametrically opposite". The design of Behold is to eventually allow source-based data entry, which few programs do. I would not say I'm as interested in the "proof" side of it as I am in the documentation ...

How many sources/citations is too many? - Blog comment by lkessler - 28 Dec 2013
Jan,
So why go through all that extra work and clutter it up for yourself? It isn't necessary.
What is necessary is to have every source documented so that they can be found again. Linking the source once per person is all that is necessary. It need not be linked from multiple events or numerous ...

Random Tidbits - Blog comment by lkessler - 20 Oct 2013
Keith,
I didn't mean to belittle the significance of the shutdown. But other than Susan Kitchens who was mad because NASA closed up, I don't recall any other genealogy bloggers mention the shutdown. For the genealogists at least, it just seemed to be business as usual, and that's what I was referring ...

Features Creep, Part 2 - Blog comment by lkessler - 18 Oct 2013
If I could figure out a good way of enabling plug-ins in Behold, I'll definitely do that. I'm keeping my eyes open for ways to do that in Delphi and the way Behold is programmed.
What may be more possible is that the future database Behold will use will likely by SQLite (same database as RootsMagic, but the ...

A Recipe for GEDCOM - Blog comment by lkessler - 4 Aug 2013
Bob,
With BetterGEDCOM, I do recall discussing the copyright. In the BetterGEDCOM requirements, the copyright is listed as one of the requirement constraints. But I don't remember any formal inquiry being made about it.
Yes, you are correct. If FHISO or anyone else decides to update, rather than rewrite ...

A Recipe for GEDCOM - Blog comment by lkessler - 3 Aug 2013
Justin,
Excellent question.
Here's 4 reasons why the community doesn't think GEDCOM can be fixed:
1. The community only sees that their data does not transfer and blame it all on GEDCOM. In fact, only part of it is GEDCOM, and those parts can be fixed.
2. They see that GEDCOM has not been updated ...
