General Discussion: Beta?

Given all the highly significant changes you're making in 1.1, wouldn't a public beta be useful so we wouldn't all have to hold our breath until you've ironed out all the complexities of date checking and manual updating? Even if the life events weren't all as polished as you'd like, it would us adoring acolytes a sample to play with, get a feel for where you're heading, and possibly even result in useful feedback (probably from the many more qualified than I am). After all, it's not like we're going to follow you over a cliff with our data, it's liability-free. Of course I can see why you might not want a lot of public exposure of the Grand Idea yet - it'l have to be your call.

Am I able to input an AKA under Name, to include a date and place known as that individual, and retain GEDCOM standard?

My GEDCOM is exported as:

1 NAME Caroline Juliette Edmonds
2 DATE 12 MAR 1891
2 PLAC Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

however this flags as an error, Unknown record found, in vGed 3.04.

It appears either GEDCOM 5.5.1 does not allow any details other than Name and Type or vGed 3.04 is over fussy.

Behold does not log this an error.

After several years, much assistance from Behold's great GEDCOM validation, advice from Louis and support from Darrin and the User Group of The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG), I now have a GEDCOM exported file which meets 5.5.1.

What a pleasure it was to see
'No problems to report.'
in the File Information section of The Everything Report and
'Summary of all GEDCOM Messages
No problems to report.'
in the log file.

Thanks all for the assistance.

General Discussion: I love this so far.

I think that the greatest use I've found so far is finding duplicate Source Listings, and/or people, in my Master Ged file. I've been gradually eliminating or combining them as I found them while searching through my PAF5 Program. But, PAF5 makes it difficult (time comsuming) to do this, beginning with finding them.

With BEHOLD!, Finding Duplicate Source Listings and Notes is simple. Now all I have to do is figure out how to print just the duplicates from BEHOLD! so I can fix them in PAF5.

I'm also eagerly waiting for the ability to save combined GEDCOM Files from FamilySearch.org to eliminate all those fragmented files. I don't want to alter them except to combine them into one GEDCOM file (instead of dozens for each family).

I love this program!

Max

Louis, you really have accomplished something very impressive. I am brand new to genealogy (about 6 weeks actively pursuing a pedigree) and was immediately aware that Brother's Keeper, which I purchased after seeing someone's notebook computer screen in the state historical library, wasn't displaying any of the reams of data I was painstakingly entering. Behold does all of that, and is extremely user friendly and intuitive to boot. I didn't know what a GEDCOM file was last week; now I have a report that looks like a professional product.

Thanks for all of the hard work you've put into this project. I'm excited to see where it all ends up.

John

This is a bit of a poll. It will take extra work to support Windows 98, and some future features may not be possible if I want keep Behold Windows 98 compatible.

How many of you still use Windows 98 and don't expect to upgrade or buy a new computer in the next few months? Should I continue to support Windows 98 for as long as possible, or should I not bother with Windows 98 support even for version 1.0?

What do you think?

Either way, I will e-mail all those who have purchased Behold and if any of them use Windows 98 (right now I don't know of any) then I will try to continue support as long as possible.

Thanks for your input.

Louis

You are lucky, being only 2nd in line for the new Potter book. We were on a cruise to Alaska when it came out and I had to find a bookshop in Juneau (not a tourist one, either) that had the book for my son. He finished it within a week. Now it's my wife's turn and then mine. My son is being very tight-lipped about the plot.
Louis,

I'm concerned about your commitment to this project. I don't understand how you could take off Mother's Day (if they have it the same day in Canada as the US) to celebrate with your family instead of slaving away at Behold. Wouldn't a couple of quick phone calls have kept everyone happy?

Seriously, I've been keeping up with your Blog and eagerly await the next release. It can't come fast enough for me. It looks like you're making some pretty good progress. Keep up the good work but be sure to take the time you need to keep the batteries charged.
