Report a Problem: Misleading message or Windows playing up?

After import of GEDCOM, when I check the log file for full details, the following appears towards the bottom of the section.

Only the first 100 of each type of message are listed.
To display all messages:
Uncheck the "Log File: Max 100 messages" setting
under Organize -> Report -> Extra Info
and reinput your files.
The input will take longer if there are a lot of messages.

When I Uncheck as above, and either Apply or OK, the loaded file is immediately refreshed with a new log file.

If though, I then import/open the file, it defaults to 100 again, so the message is slightly misleading, as there is no need to reinput the file. I have been unable to save this as an ongoing default option.

Report a Problem: Date validation - case sensitive

Louis
What do you make of Tamura Jone's comment (http://www.tamurajones.net/SiblingTortureTest.xhtml):

None of these produced any errors or warnings, except Behold 1.04.
Behold warned that the date 13 Apr 2012 is non-standard, and should be 13 APR 2012; the warning is that the abbrevation should be in ALL-CAPITALS.
That is what the specification seems to say, but it does not;
Chapter 2 of the GEDCOM 5.5.1 specification clearly states that All controlled line_value choices should be considered as case insensitive.,
and that values should be converted to all uppercase or all lowercase prior to comparing.
That means that Apr is fine, and that means that you may even write aPR or aPr

It seems to me that all lower or all upper is correct but not mixed, as Tamura suggests.

I noticed your recent blog post regarding correct ordering of dates (eg burial after death - which behold does correctly out of the box).

Can I note that probate also must happen after death (and almost always after burial/cremation - I can only think of very esoteric reasons that would invert that!).

Behold, at the moment, places probate before death even where full dates for death/burial/probate are given.

I couldn't see this mentioned elsewhere, but perhaps I've missed something :)

I noticed that there was some lack of consistency in the way that I had named places/locations. For example, some times I use England, sometimes United Kingdom. Also had a few mispells where England was Enlgand, etc.

Accordingly I tried to correct/edit these in the right hand window. Behold left me type in the changes but didn't accept he edits. I thought I would change the display level and scrolled up and Behold hung and wouldn't recover.

Promising looking piece of software. If I can successfully do simple edits like the one attempted above, I will purchase on that ground alone.

I am working on a french translation of the Tag and Report items (Organize Windows). The following translations don't work.
In the Report tab":
1) "the word: "and"": I translate it by "et", but couples and parents are reported with "and". Ex:
reported: Paul Smith and Marie [Boucher] Smith
should be: Paul Smith et Marie [Boucher] Smith
2) "Everyone Else": I translate it by "Autres personnes", but this title in the report and in the table of contents is reported as "EveryoneElse" .

Others questions:
a) I unselected some tags, in the Tags tab, but they are still reported (in light gray)?

b) I want that wifes be reported with her birth name and not her married name. How I can do that ? (For many years now, wifes keep her birth (first) name when she got married; I can't report them with a name that it knew by nobody).

P.S: Excuse me for mistakes, English is not my first language.

I just downloaded the latest alpha today. I selected open of a GEDCOM I created from TMG a few weeks ago. It sat at least 10 minutes at 99% (50% 32%) preparing report. Finally it changed to Done (lower left) and 100% (49% 31%) with an empty "Good Ideas" dialog box. It would not respond to any clicks and I was finally forced to kill it. I restarted it again and tried to load the GEDCOM again, seems to be doing the same thing. I believe I have between 3500 - 3800 people in the GEDCOM

I've run into a minor problem with loading gedcoms that include certain gedcom key symbols in a note field. If things like @ or / are included in a NOTE, Behold locks up. Eliminating those symbols from the NOTE in the gedcom solves the problem for me, but others may not know how.

I've also run into another lockup problem that I haven't pinpointed yet. It only happens while importing multiple gedcoms together. Loading any one of the same gedcoms individually works fine.

I'm using Behold version 0.98.5 Alpha.

Max haiflich, Jr.

When loading a certain GEDCOM file downloaded from LDS (a pedigree file) I get a "Invalid Pointer Operation" alert and Behold locks up and won't close itself. I have to use the Windows Task manager to close it.

I have checked the GEDCOM and found that it has two INDI Pointers(tags) to individuals not encluded in the file. This has been a constant problem with many other programs.

Could your program add an Unlisted or Unknown ro etc, listing for that missing individual or warn and reject that file without locking up? Short of veiwing each and every GEDCOM that I download for that and other minor glitches, I see no other way of avoiding this problem.

It is very annoying to have a program lock up while importing these GEDCOM files. Especially since LDS insists on downloading only small pieces of large GEDCOM Files (either single family groups or 4-generation pedigrees).

Max Haiflich, Jr.

Hi Louis,

I've noticed a possible glitch in Behold's Everything Report when it displays the biological relationships between parent and child. I see that Behold repeats this information about three to four times when it should be listed only once per child.

Ex: Relationship to Father: Biological. Relationship to Mother: Biological. Relationship to Father: Biological. Relationship to Mother: Biological.

It appears to be random through out TER and only in this tag. I ran a relationship report in Legacy and it only displays the biological relationship once. Any ideas?

Thanks Steve

Hi, all. After loading 98.7 and attempting to open a GEDCOM, I receive the following error message (complete with big red X in the left hand corner):

Access violation @ address 005E0621 in module 'behold.exe.' Read of address 00000000.

When I hit the "OK" button attached to this message, the message box goes away, but the hour glass stays on, and I cannot work with the program. If I click on any heading within the program, I get a warning box (with yellow caution triangle on the left) that says:

Cannot find this jump location.

Hitting the "OK" button makes the box go away, but the hour glass again comes on, and the program is inoperable.

Right clicking leads to messages for instant organizing, etc., but following up on them takes me back to the initial Access violation @ address 005E0621 message. Eventually have to use control/alt/del to exit.

Any ideas? Is this a solitary event?

Any help appreciated!
Report a Problem: Not Combining multiple GEDCOM Files correctly

Louis,

LDS Familysearch website only allows downloads of either single family groups or 5 generatio pedigree files. To get a complete family tree, you have to download a combination of pedigree files and family group files, then combine them.

Combining them is only possible two ways, importing them into a genealogy program or combining them manually in a Text Editor.

Unfortunately, in the process of following the various family branches through the LDS site, it is extremely easy to miss a few, or get lost in thre maze they create.

Combining the various files in a Genealogy Program requires careful review and comparison with the LDS Site itself to find any missing branches. Time consuming and prone to the same problem as navigating the LDS site itself.

Combining the various files in a Text Editor manually is even more time consuming, but makes it much easier to find missing branches.

I came across your program while looking for a text editor with a better script language to automate combining these files. Your approach holds great promise for solving my problem and making several other things simpler for me.

Anyway, on to the problem with your program. Adding gedcoms does not combine them properly. I will Email you the .bho file and appropriate gedcom files for your perusal. I will also include two text files that shows the basic line of Descendents. LDS shows two different heads of the same family line here and the text files shows the "descendents of" for each. You can compare them to what your program does.

Max

I am having a problem sometimes when I print. It doesn't happen all the time, just occasionally. The page is not centered and cuts off on the right side, with a large left margin. Any suggestions?
Linda

Behold reports some people in my GEDCOM file as being unconnected, but I don't think they should be. These people are brothers/sisters of "connected" people, so I don't see why they are listed as unconnected. They don't have defined parents, that's the only difference.

Report a Problem: Problem with Name order from GEDCOM file

I have a GEDCOM file with names that have different orderings -- some names use a traditional ordering (Surname Middlename Givenname), and others use a modern ordering (Givenname Middlename Surname). For example:

0 @I1@ INDI
1 NAME Given1 Middle1 /Surname1/
2 GIVN Given1 Middle1
2 SURN Surname1
0 @I2@ INDI
1 NAME /Surname2/ Middle2 Given2
2 GIVN Given2 Middle2
2 SURN Surname2

For people like I2, Behold will print "For information about Surname2 Middle2, see ...". It looks like it is trying to parse everything up to the last word in NAME as a given name, instead of using the GIVN tag.

A simple solution would be not to even print the given name in this type of reference -- it's redundant, since the full name has just been printed. i.e. just go with ", see ...". That would also save an extra line which is critical for saving print space.

This type of ordering is very common for traditional Indian names, so I expect it will come up in many cases.

How is the main family, for instance Cok-1 decided? The one selected is not the primary family that I am keying on. Possibly the user could select the primary family? Just trying to understand how this selection and numbering process works?

Kindest regards,
Beth G.

Report a Problem: Handling of CONC tags

When I pull in a GEDCOM that contains CONC tags, they don't seem to be parsed correctly.

How I understand it is that when you have a long NOTE that needs to be broken down into multiple lines the additional lines start with either a CONT or a CONC tag. The CONT and CONC tags work exactly the same except where CONT puts in a space and then the text, CONC concatenates the text right onto the end of the last line. CONTinuation versus CONCatenation, I guess.

PAF seems to adhere to these standards pretty closely. Whenever there is a CONC tag the line starts with a word that is divided. FTM manages to screw it up. I think that they use CONC tags and don't split words, so you get a lot of run-together words with their GEDCOMS.

At any rate the CONC appears right in the Everything report. And now that I've type all of this, I'll go back and try changing the text to a null string in the Behold options to see what happens.
