Questions and Answers: missing organize page

Help. I finally decided to quit waiting for the next version and started to try to understand the possibilities of what's there. Loaded a Gedcom, played around some with the report format, (maybe more on that later) and then decided to get into the Organize options. Stone wall. Neither the Organize menu nor the BHO icon nor F9 will bring up an Organize page. The Gedcom and Log icons work, the header bar grays out like the program was trying to do something, but nothing happens. I'm at a loss to know where to start. I've downloaded another copy of the program, reinstalled it a couple of times, to no effect. I'm running Win 7 64bit on a moderately powered Acer laptop, tend to operate with lots of open windows, but does ok with things like Delorme Topo or Goldwave or ACDSee, and loads my 500 name Gedcom in an eye-blink. It's gotta be something dumb. Any ideas out there?

Louis

The following is created after GEDCOM export by one of the programs I use. Behold does not flag it as error or warning.

1 NAME Shown as First Middle Last on First2 Middle2 Last2's Marriage Record, NSW BDM 1891/999.
2 DATE 01 JAN 1891
2 PLAC Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

However, one of the other programs does, with:

Warning : Unknown level 2 tag (skipped).
2 DATE 01 JAN 1891
Warning : Unknown level 2 tag (skipped).
2 PLAC Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

It appears it does not like the Date and Place as a level 2 within NAME.

How do you see this? I cannot find anything in the 5.5 specs.

Louis
Wondering what Behold does with GEDCOM 5.5EL.

See http://www.tamurajones.net/DetectingGEDCOM5.5EL.xhtml

Also, Tamura states:

The illegal VERS value invalidates the GEDCOM header and as a rule, GEDCOM readers should reject files that do not even contain a valid GEDCOM header. A forgiving GEDCOM reader that recognises the illegal value could issue a non-fatal error and continue.

I would not classify Behold as a forgiving GEDCOM reader, rather one that 'can read and error report' on most (all?) GEDCOM files.

On Thu, 3 Dec 2009 you posted:

However, Tamura's review has already led me to think I should reinstitute the logfile that was in versions of Behold up to 2 years ago. It integrates the log and the GEDCOM files together in a window which would allow clicking on an error message and taking you right to the line in question. And that will be one of the next things on my list (after the bug fixes) because having the log file will help to diagnose problems better, such as the ones arising in the early beta.

I am wondering where the 'clicking on an error' bit is, as I do not seem to see it in the latest version?

I have come across your program and I'm very interested in what the program may or may not be able to do. I have downloaded the evaluation Beta and imported/exported the appropriate GEDCOM file from my original Family Tree for Windows. I have noticed that it is very easy to amend information quickly, however, when I saved the changes and re-opened the file that I belived was changed, the changes had not been taken.

I was wondering how Behold is set up to work with adoptions and blended families. I have some ancestors from the 1700's who were married more than once having children with each spouse and then the children were adopted/blended into one family. I noticed on my file, that one of these families showed that a child was a member of one of the families (he died shortly after birth). This child had a younger brother who does not show up under the biological dad, but does show up under the adopted father. Is there a way for this child to show up under both the biological and adopted parent?

Thank you.
Jennifer
