Further to Sunday’s computer troubles: The 2nd drive actually wouldn’t attach to my machine as a slave because my machine would need a Bios upgrade. I seem to recall that Bios upgrades always used to be free, but www.esupport.com wants $59 for the upgrade. Forget that! I would also have had to reformat the drive, since Windows 98 cannot read NTFS, only FAT.

I had bought the eMachine with a 3-year extended warranty from Best Buy. I usually never buy extended warranties, but was worried at the time about the LCD screen which were less reliable back then. We have not had a problem with the Medion screen which has been great. But now that the “disaster” has been remedied, I can in non-panic mode see how well Best Buy honors their warranty and what sort of hassles and waiting time will be involved for the repairs. I took it in today and it “only” took 40 minutes for the one service person to handle the two people ahead of me.

P.S. The conclusion is that for technology items like computers, never get the extended warranty. Instead of paying the $180 up front, take the chance and if it becomes necessary, buy the replacement parts or whole computer for $550 two years later. For the extra $370, we also got a faster processor, more RAM, larger hard drive, DVD-writer, card reader plus a two-year newer computer.
