I got a very interesting question in the e-mail today. They wanted a genealogy program that can run multiple instances from a server. They were looking for an easier way of sharing their GEDCOM files with my family. Did I have any idea what programs might do this?

In section 5 of my Genealogy Program Software Links page, I list a number of Online Genealogy Programs, many of which are open source and free to use. But most people don’t have the technical ability to install them on their website, so there are a number of online services that host these programs for you and charge you a monthly fee.

In addition to this there are now several programs that could read the data from one or more of these online services, download it to your machine, allow you to edit it and send your changes back to the service. This was an intriguing idea I had never thought of. There is no reason why I couldn’t build this into Behold if enough people wanted it. Online data sharing and collaboration of the data editing between multiple people does seem to be gaining a lot in popularity.

I’ve added a note about this in my future plans, and I’ll keep my eye on this trend.
