I got an e-mail from someone letting me know that there is a site with a FAQ for the GenBox program that I should add to my Genealogy Software Links page. Taking a look at the FAQ and renewing my curiosity about GenBox, I see the program has made several advances. I remember the program from 10 years ago when it was a DOS program that did an excellent job producing Box charts in ASCII text. Well in the newest version of their program, their methodology for implementing Sources and Source citations is probably the best currently available - even better than TMG. Then I see a whole bunch of messages of people switching from TMG to GenBox. I downloaded a trial version and tried it out. I considered moving GenBox into my top four programs, except that some comments of other people seemed to indicate the data entry is difficult - all those tedious forms to fill out!

Was able to use GenBox to export its sample file as GEDCOM and test it with Behold. Again, the silly Windows 98 problem of not passing the complete file name in quotes reared its head. I decided to sit down and fix this for once and for all. Fortunately, I found you cannot select more than one file and open them both at the same time, so there is no guessing required as to how to find where one filename starts and the next stops. That wasn’t so bad after all. And the sample file will be a good test for Behold as it has several different structures I hadn’t seen before.
