Wow! This worked out even better than I expected.
I set up a “Numbering” menu and taskbar item. When you click it, it will toggle the display of numbering on and off. I implemented it using an “invisible text” feature that I got to work in Richview. I actually give the numbering its own style, and when I turn numbering off, I ignore (i.e. don’t display) anything of that style. All it requires is a formatting of the document, so it is quite fast.
I realized I could do the same thing for the short/long display of References. (That’s the and [...] icons on the toolbar.) If I make the Reference descriptions their own style, then I can simply make them invisible when short references are wanted. Instead of reloading the document (which can take time) to change the reference style, now only a reformat is needed and it happens very fast. Superb!
